چکیده

The Larsemann Hills (69°24'5, 76°20'E), situated on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, Antarctica, consist of a series oflow-Iying, rocky peninsulas and islands on the southern shore of Prydz Bay. This area (fig. 1), which extends over 200 km2, is ice-free during the summer and bestrewn with more than 150 freshwater lakes. In the 1990/91 and 1991192 austral summers, the opportunity arose to determine the rotifers of some of these lakes; the results obtained are presented here.

Unique Similarity of Faunal Communities across Aquatic–Terrestrial Interfaces in a Polar Desert Ecosystem Soil–Sediment Boundaries and Faunal Community

Critical transition zones, such as aquatic–terrestrial interfaces, have been recognized as important features in landscape ecology. Yet changes in the community structure of soil and sediment biota across aquatic–terrestrial boundaries remain relatively unstudied. We investigated the community structure of the dominant fauna, namely nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades, across lake sediment–soil...

Foreign genes and novel hydrophilic protein genes participate in the desiccation response of the bdelloid rotifer Adineta ricciae.

Bdelloid rotifers are aquatic micro-invertebrates with the ability to survive extreme desiccation, or anhydrobiosis, at any life stage. To gain insight into the molecular mechanisms used by bdelloids during anhydrobiosis, we constructed a cDNA library enriched for genes that are upregulated in Adineta ricciae 24 h after onset of dehydration. Resulting expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were analyse...

Aquatic Organisms in Acidic Environments: A Literata[

_ _ Acid deposition has aroused concern about aquatic organisms in soft water lakes and streams, as the loss of indigenous species is commonly observed when pH decreases. This literature review was initiated to intensively examine the distribution of invertebrates with respect to pH, in order to define the tolerance limits of various species in acidified waters and predict how acidification wou...

Assimilation of micro- and mesozooplankton by zebra mussels: A demonstration of the food web link between zooplankton and benthic suspension feeders

We tested the hypothesis that rotifer species in the microand mesozooplankton are a potential food source for zebra mussels. We labeled phytoplankton with 14C, fed them to two species of rotifers (140–210 mm length) that were previously found abundantly in the Hudson River and had declined following a zebra mussel invasion, and estimated the assimilation of carbon. Assimilation efficiencies wer...

Early life stages of fish and the relationships with zooplankton in a tropical Brazilian reservoir: Lake Monte Alegre.

For evaluating the trophic relationship between early life stages of fish and zooplankton in Lake Monte Alegre, fish distribution and feeding habits have been studied in areas with and without macrophytes. In the first of these areas, 356 specimens belonging to 8 species, mostly juveniles, were caught by a sieve. Another 35 specimens, belonging to 4 species, were caught by gill nets and seine i...
